I grew up next to the Mekeels in Cohoes. Karen was fun, friendly, down-to-earth, and FUNNY. I was pretty young when I first became friends with Courtney, but I remember thinking her mom was cool and had a great sense of humor.
Thinking back on it, now as an adult and parent of little ones, Karen kinda was like Wilson from Home Impovement. When me and Courtney were young, Alex and Kailea even younger, Karen would frequently pop up at the front screen door to check on us kids playing but when I got older and the kids play stopped, Karen and I would stand at the side-fence and chit chat. She had such a hearty laugh and I always thought she was the cool mom of the neighborhood, even though we kids would call her “old lady”, which she took in stride.
One funny story that I will never forget. We kids were playing in front of the Mekeel’s house and the hill was COMPLETELY frozen and was a sheet of ice. Little Kailea got her snowsuit caught in the dividing fence between their property and Mr. Mariano’s and started screaming. All of us kids were watching and doing what kids do in a situation like that, nothing, and Karen heard and was about to come out when Van had just gotten home from work. Karen yelled out to him to go quickly help Kailea and Van, in dress pants and holding a briefcase attempted to climb the hill but slipped on the ice and landed face first, his forehead slapping the ice. He got up, helped Kailea and his head was beet red. Karen stood at the screen door clearly trying to hold back laughter given that her hubby just walked into a crazy show and got hurt being a good dad, but she couldn’t hold it in and burst into tears.
Mekeels: I am so sorry for your loss. I have very fond memories growing up next door to you all and your mom was a big part of that. I hope you can use the memories to keep her in your hearts.

Van, Courtney,Alex and Kailea...
My deepest sympathy to you and the rest of the family. May you find comfort in knowing she is at peace. She will be missed by many, I know I miss her already. We last saw each other 7 yrs ago at the 1000 Islands and had a great time and so glad to have that memory and many from years past. We talked almost everyday on messenger and we always had something to talk about or laugh about.
My heart is heavy right now, but I know she is watching over all of you.
May god bless her and you all...
Love to everyone,
Debbie Potter

I am so very sorry for all of you. I know how hard this is especially at this season.
I hadn't known her for long but the few times we spoke I found very rewarding and happy that I had met a new friend.
She will be missed.

I remember the Rochester days- especially the party at your apartment. Courtney was crying. You two had a nickname for her... Rick was unable to drive his standard shift Honda and expected me to drive. This was at 4 am and I had no clue what Iwas doing. 45 Minutes later we were off, but not without entertaining the two of you and your neighbors with our antics. So sorry to hear of your loss Van. I hope the happy memories sustain you in the days to come.
